Disney “The Mysterious Benedict Society”

2022 · FuseFX · DFX Supervisor

I served as DFX Supervisor on season 2 of Disney+'s “The Mysterious Benedict Society”, leading the work to realize the show's quirky, surreal, retro-1960s world. My team built the season's signature vessel, the S.S. Shortcut, a fully CG ocean liner inspired by the Queen Mary but redesigned into its own unique ship, which meant matching the set-dressed live-action plates for close shots and inventing broader designs for the full-ship reveals. Recreating the Atlantic around it was its own challenge, requiring terabytes of fluid simulation to generate the wakes, splashes, foam, and waves of a ship moving at speed. We also designed and built a one-of-a-kind dirigible at a scale with no real-world reference, along with set and environment extensions including a largely digital train and the eccentric, cobbled-together "Two House" featured throughout the finale. Disney gave us unusual creative latitude to design much of this ourselves from concept sketches, filling in what wasn't fleshed out while staying faithful to the show's aesthetic.
